Loretto Chappell collection, 1948-1966.

The collection of Loretto Chappell contains a variety of information, including photos and correspondence between her and Gertrud Mahler, a German woman, from 1948 to 1966, as well as correspondence between Chappell and Catherine Thurston and Mil Lapsinova. The collection also contains information about Miss Chappell being suspected of affiliation with the Communist Party by the state of Georgia in the early 1950s.

Loretto Chappell was born in Milledgeville, Georgia in 1885. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Harris Chappell. Dr. Chappell, her father, was the first president of Georgia Normal and Industrial College. She later attended school there and went on to obtain her master's degree from Richmond School of Social Work at William and Mary College.
